A little bit of history

Conveniently located north of Oaxaca’s city center, Casa Panchita offers a tranquil retreat for visitors to this center of Mexican arts and history. A warm, family-run guesthouse, Casa Panchita sits on a colorful, cobblestone street in the Xochimilco barrio, a traditional center of tin workers and weavers who produce tablecloths and bedspreads on foot looms. The neighborhood lies about 15 minutes by foot from the historic center of Oaxaca.

Casa Panchita’s six individually decorated guest rooms cluster around a central patio filled with colorful works by the potters, wood carvers, and weavers who have made this area of Mexico a favorite destination for lovers of fine art, folk art and regional cuisine. All rooms have private baths and feature local fabrics. Red and purple bougainvillea spill though the central garden, attracting a variety of birds. At the back of the garden, a small pool offers an inviting retreat on warm Oaxacan afternoons

A heritage of hospitality

Casa Panchita has welcomed guests for half a century, beginning as a summer retreat for girls in 1955 and transitioning in 1981 into a guesthouse operated by the Ramírez Pérez family. Constructed along the path of an aqueduct that dates from 1751, the thick-walled house is estimated to be 100 years of age. Remaining arches of the aqueduct line the scenic walk into the city center.
